The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
